Heading into Euro 2024, Germany's legendary goalkeeper Manuel Neuer is under enormous pressure.

After a number of ill-timed, high-profile errors on the eve of the summer campaign for club and country, doubters quickly emerged to call for him to be replaced by Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

To his credit, though, the 38-year-old did not let glaring errors in Germany's two warm-up games and in the Champions League defeat to Real Madrid prevent him from giving it his all when the tournament began.

So far, he has overcome the doubters and built a good reputation on home soil, and his performances are to be admired as he proves he still has quality and that age is nothing more than a number.

"It's important to stay united. We have a big squad with great players, but starting arguments doesn't help. The goalkeepers try to support each other," Neuer said when asked about the subject.

With his wealth of experience, the former World Cup winner has been a key figure for Julian Nagelsmann's side, who have come out of this tournament with strong wins over Scotland and Hungary.

"We were determined to win the game today and show that we were good against Scotland. We knew Hungary would be a tough opponent but we dominated. You could see the excitement in the stadium. We are happy to play this game at home," insisted Neuer.

"But we were unlucky to concede against Scotland - I think we should have kept a clean sheet there. It was very important not to concede today."

He was at his best and seemed unafraid of the strong spotlight, performing brilliantly for Germany both with and without the ball.

Although he didn't feature much in the opening game against a short-handed Scotland side, he showed flashes of his quality on several occasions against Hungary.

He was sent in to stop Roland Sallai's attack in the first minute and he made a crucial save with great momentum, setting the tone for his excellent performance.

His superb save to stop Dominik Szoboszlai's shot was his next eye-catching move as he sprinted to block a superb shot from the Liverpool star.

Reading the script with keen insight, reacting instinctively and with conviction, this pause exemplifies exactly why he is so proficient in this field.

He has just become the goalkeeper with the most European Nations Championship appearances (36), surpassing the phenomenal goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon and breaking Philipp Lahm's record for German Championship appearances, further proving the legendary status of the veteran of four World Cups and four European Championships.

Considering his ability on the ball and his shot-saving ability, coupled with his valuable experience, it is no surprise that Nagelsmann considers him as his first choice.

And that's what matters most, because the talented coach, who would not even consider giving up Neuer, is ultimately the one responsible for selecting the team, not the German media.
